Clarification

The January 2003 Research Activities included an article on a possible link between cigarette smoking and excessive television viewing among adolescents. During the timeframe of the study (1990-1992), the prevalence of cigarette smoking among adolescents was increasing, as noted by the authors of the study. However, we now have more recent information on trends in teen smoking.

Statistics posted on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Web site in May 2002 indicate that teen smoking prevalence has been declining since 1996-1997. These data show that 28.5 percent of high school students currently smoke cigarettes, down from 36.4 percent in 1997 and 34.8 percent in 1999.
