Secretary of State's 2004 Awards for Corporate Excellence

Yesterday, Secretary of State Colin Powell presented the Secretary of State's 2004 Awards for Corporate Excellence (ACE) at a ceremony held in the Department's Benjamin Franklin Diplomatic Reception Room. The Secretary recognized two U.S. firms for their outstanding corporate citizenship, innovation, and exemplary international business practices and for exhibiting the qualities of conscience, character and integrity. The Awards, which were established in 1999, demonstrate how American firms can do best by doing well.

The recipients of this year's Secretary of State Awards for Corporate Excellence are Motorola, Inc., of Schaumburg, Illinois, for the work of its subsidiary Motorola Brasil, and the small-medium enterprise FIJI Water of Basalt, Colorado, for their corporate stewardship in Fiji.

Motorola received the Secretary of State's Award for Corporate Excellence for its commitment to good corporate citizenship, investments in vital development, and environmental stewardship in Brazil. Motorola provides resources for increasing public safety; investing in social programs for high-risk youths; encouraging employee volunteerism; developing water treatment and recycling programs; and donating hundreds of millions of dollars to both the Technological Campus in Sao Paulo and a dozen research universities. The company has made a long-term commitment to corporate stewardship. Motorola is the first two-time winner of the ACE; it received the Award in 2000 for corporate stewardship in Malaysia.

FIJI Water received the Secretary of State's Award for Corporate Excellence for its positive impact on the economic, civic and cultural life of the people of Fiji. The company has acted as an economic engine and a pioneer of responsible environmental protection and practices in Fiji. FIJI

Water is committed to education, disaster relief, progressive labor practices, and environmental projects in Fiji.
