What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Moderately Effective

In general, a program rated Moderately Effective has set ambitious goals and is well-managed. Moderately Effective programs likely need to improve their efficiency or address other problems in the programs' design or management in order to achieve better results.
  • The United States Merchant Marine Academy has a clear purpose to produce well-qualified merchant marine officers who are obligated to serve a set number of years in a reserve component of the US Armed Forces and to work in maritime-related employment.
  • The Academy needs to improve its ability to achieve its performance goals and demonstrate cost effectiveness, particularly in comparison with other programs that have a similar purpose and goals.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Developing additional efficiency measures to demonstrate improved cost effectiveness that are easily comparable with other, similar education programs.
  • Develop policies and procedures to allocate USMMA resources strategically.
