Advanced Placement

The program's two components, Advanced Placement (AP) Test Fees and AP Incentives, support State and local efforts to give more low-income students the opportunity to take AP and international baccalaureate (IB) classes and tests. It subsidizes test fees and expands access to academically challenging programs.

PERFORMING
Moderately Effective

In general, a program rated Moderately Effective has set ambitious goals and is well-managed. Moderately Effective programs likely need to improve their efficiency or address other problems in the programs' design or management in order to achieve better results.
  • The assessment found that the program addresses a compelling need. Rigor of the high school curriculum (more than any other factor) is strongly associated with a student's chances for succeeding in postsecondary education. Low-income and minority students have limited opportunity to take AP and IB classes.
  • The program is reaching its original performance targets to a large extent. AP test- taking by low-income students has increased rapidly, specifically, by 14% in 2006 over 2005.
  • The Department has performance measures in the areas of minority student participation, AP test pass rates, and program efficiency.

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Collecting data for the new performance measures.
  • Working to present data for the new performance measures to the public in a transparent manner.
  • Using the performance data to drive program improvements, as part of Administration strategy to strengthen high school education.
