US Geological Survey - Geographic Research, Investigations, and Remote Sensing

The Geography Program ensures access to a common set of current, accurate, and consistent data and scientific information that describe the Earth's land surface. This information is used to help inform decisions by policymakers, resource managers, researchers, citizens, and the private sector.

Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Effective

This is the highest rating a program can achieve. Programs rated Effective set ambitious goals, achieve results, are well-managed and improve efficiency.
  • The program is achieving long-term performance goals related to land cover and ecosystem mapping. For example, in 2005, Geography completed ecoregion assessments for the Eastern U.S. and AK; thereby meeting its performance target to provide ecoregion assessments for 37% of nation.
  • The program makes better use of remotely sensed imagery by prioritizing federal agency requirements. Outreach on this effort included workshops on data applications; and conducting a survey that examined the market for moderate resolution satellite data.
  • The program developed a 5 year plan to focus on geographic research. This plan was developed in response to the National Research Council's findings.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Complete 2001 NLCD product and promote the use of land cover trends data and ecosystem services information by decision-makers.
  • Define requirements for Landsat-type data and expand access to remote sensing data.
