Polar Research Tools, Facilities and Logistics

NSF funds science in both polar regions, and operations, logistics, and stations required to support research. NSF also provides interagency leadership. The Foundation manages all U.S. Antarctic activities as a single, integrated program making research possible by scientists supported by NSF and U.S. mission agencies.

Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Effective

This is the highest rating a program can achieve. Programs rated Effective set ambitious goals, achieve results, are well-managed and improve efficiency.
  • The program has been effective in supporting polar research. It has been successful in meeting its performance goals, including the percent of planned research for which the program provides needed support and the efficient construction of major polar projects, as monitored by Earned Value Management.
  • The program has been successful in efficient and safe construction and operation of facilities.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Monitoring ongoing and new construction and operations to ensure efficiency, an ongoing challenge in the harsh Antarctic climate.
  • Working with the Coast Guard and other stakeholders to ensure continued access to Antarctic research stations despite challenging ice conditions and an evolving icebreaker fleet.
