Rating

What This Rating Means

PERFORMING
Adequate

This rating describes a program that needs to set more ambitious goals, achieve better results, improve accountability or strengthen its management practices.
  • The purpose and need for the program are clear. This program is the only Federal entity responsible for providing management, preservation and access to the Federal government's permanent records.
  • Program management and strategic planning are generally sound. The program faces a major challenge in ensuring that other Federal agencies commit to sound records management practices to enable the program to meet its overall goals.
  • The majority of the program's performance measures are adequate. NARA continues to improve its performance measures that assess the program's efforts in providing sufficient guidance and assistance to other Federal agencies on the management of their records and the cost-efficiency of the program.

Improvement Plan

About Improvement Plans

We are taking the following actions to improve the performance of the program:

  • Refining its records management policies and strategies and engaging with Federal agencies to continue methods of improving records management across the Federal government.
  • Continuing to refine performance measures that assess the program's efforts in providing sufficient guidance and assistance to other Federal agencies on their records management efforts.
