Considerable variation in multiple jobholding by State

The rate of multiple jobholding varied substantially across the States in 1998. Louisiana had the lowest rate—3.8 percent—and North Dakota had the highest—10.8 percent.

In addition to North Dakota, two States had multiple jobholding rates above 10 percent in 1998, putting them well above the national average of 6.0 percent. Montana had a rate of 10.6 percent, and Minnesota’s rate was 10.2 percent.

Besides Louisiana, four States had multiple jobholding rates below 5 percent in 1998. New York and Texas both had the second lowest rate—4.7 percent—followed by Mississippi (4.8 percent) and North Carolina (4.9 percent).
