Dear Colleagues:
On this sixth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Americans will mark the day with prayers, memorials, and moments of silence. An increasing number will also honor the victims and heroes of 9/11 by engaging in acts of service.
In his 2007 proclamation for Patriot Day, President Bush highlights America’s compassionate response to 9/11 and encourages Americans to observe the day by serving. “The spirit of our people is the source of America's strength, and six years ago, Americans came to the aid of neighbors in need. On Patriot Day, we pray for those who died and for their families. We volunteer to help others and demonstrate the continuing compassion of our citizens.”
Along with USA Freedom Corps and the White House Council on Service and Civic Participation, the Corporation supports the efforts of mygooddeed.org and other 9/11 family groups to observe September 11 as a day of service to help others in need. More than 50,000 Americans have pledged to do good deeds to mark the day. Click here to see what members of the President’s Council are pledging. Since September is also National Preparedness Month, one smart good deed might be to help prepare your family or community for an emergency. More information on emergency preparedness is available at www.ready.gov, and www.volunteer.gov offers many service opportunities to help your community get prepared.
Out of the tragedy of 9/11 came unmistakable good – an extraordinary outpouring of compassion and concern. Spurred on by the President’s call to service, millions more Americans volunteer in their communities, and service is increasingly seen as a necessary part of the way America deals with its challenges. Thank you for helping further this movement and making our country stronger and safer through citizen service.
