Details

In addition to temporary GS-2, 3, 4, 5 crewmember positions, there are other rookie Hotshot opportunities. The BLM Hotshots frequently offer detail opportunities. Details may be available for individuals looking to spend one or more assignments or a season as a BLM Hotshot.

Fire management officers, land managers, supervisors or individuals who would like additional information about detail opportunities are urged to contact individual crew Superintendents.

Hiring Process

Each year the BLM Hotshots will receive hundreds of applications for limited openings on each crew. Crew overhead surveys applications to ensure that the minimum requirements have been met.

Applications are then screened and those meeting the crew criteria are contacted for a phone interview. In the interview, the applicant's experience level, physical fitness, and their reasons for applying are discussed in detail.

Phone interviews with the applicant's supervisors are also conducted to find out about work ethic, work performance, ability to effectively work with others. Typically, applications are then rated on the following criteria:

  • Length of Experience
  • Quality of Experience
  • Personal Interview
  • Supervisor's Recommendations

The above list is not in order of weight or priority. Any of the criteria may add or detract from the overall rating. Offers of employment to selected applicants are made by using the criteria above. Not all applicants will receive notification of their hiring status. If you are interested in inquiring about your status contact the individuals crews which you applied to.
