Turner Addresses Orlando Fourth Graders, Showcases Bald EagleBureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs October 21, 2004
Fourth grade students from Orlando’s Lake Como Elementary School learn about eagles from Assistant Secretary of State John F. Turner. Turner addressed the students at Florida Audubon Society’s Center for Birds of Prey, an urban environmental nature center in Maitland, FL that specializes in the rescue, medical care, rehabilitation and release of sick, injured, and orphaned raptors.
John F. Turner, Assistant Secretary of State, handles “Paige,” a female bald eagle at the Florida Audubon Society’s Center for Birds of Prey. Turner, who heads the State Department’s Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs, began his career in conservation studying eagles. He is the author of The Magnificent Bald Eagle, Our National Bird.
Lake Como Elementary School’s Fourth Grade Class, Assistant Secretary of State John F. Turner (with bald eagle), and staff from Audubon’s Center for Birds of Prey pose for a photo at the end of a school field trip. The students traveled to the Center to meet Assistant Secretary Turner, learn about State Department efforts with other nations to conserve migratory wildlife, and get up close to birds of prey such as the bald eagle and barred owl (both pictured).
