Located on the Niger river, 20 km from Niamey, the Island of Kanazi is home to a small village of 570 people, whose women had difficulty milling their locally grown rice and millet. A grinding mill purchased with SSH funds will facilitate other activities and generate revenue for the community. (Photos taken in May 2002 by SSH Coordinator Aboubacar Kossomi, Embassy Niamey)

Women peer inside structure containing grinding mill purchased with SSH funds. It will allow them to use their time for other important tasks, including child care and engaging in income-generating activities.

A group of community workers, which helped construct the building for the grinding mill, observe the fruits of their labor, with women and children participating in the excitement.

The ground rice and millet are being judged by other community members. These products will generate revenue for them that will help maintain the mill and fund further community development projects.
