September 3, 2008 Contact:      Bruce Collins,      307-328-4329 Rawlins BLM Plans Fall Burns The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Rawlins Field Office plans to conduct as many as nine prescribed burns this fall. These burns will be conducted in decadent stands of sagebrush, mountain shrubs, aspen, limber and ponderosa pine. “This will reduce hazardous fuel loading as well as improve wildlife habitat, livestock distribution, riparian and rangeland health,” said Aaron Mier, BLM Rawlins Field Office fuels management specialist. According to Mier, the burn areas include: Morgan Creek -- located 20 miles south of Rawlins (just north of High Savery Reservoir and west of the south road), encompassing approximately 1,000 acres. Upper Separation Creek -- ten miles south of Rawlins, encompassing 1,000 acres. East Muddy -- located north of Baggs, 200-250 acres. West Loco -- located 8 miles north of Dixon, (the second phase of an ongoing project) 1,000-1,500 acres. China Buttes/mud flats -- located near Dad, encompassing approximately 400 acres. Deep Creek -- approximately 15 miles north of Savery, 1,000 acres. Horse Springs -- east of Miracle Mile, up to 2,000 acres. Montgomery -- 15 miles southwest of Rawlins, 1,000 acres. Iron Mountain -- 15 miles southwest of Chugwater, 1,000 acres. “The ignition and timing of these prescribed burns is dependent on the weather and the fuels meeting the parameters of the burn prescription,” said Mier.
