May 15, 2008 Contact:     Lisa Marks    307-578-5942 Hike Through Natural Corral!  BLM Sponsors National Trails Day Event The Bureau of Land Management Cody Field Office will sponsor a guided hike to Natural Corral northwest of Cody, Saturday, June 7, in celebration of National Trails Day. Hikers of all ages are invited to the fun event to build awareness of local trails and recreation opportunities on public land, and demonstrate how hiking can make a healthy impact on their lives. BLM Wildlife Biologist Destin Harrell and Geologist Lisa Marks will lead the hike, describing the natural history of the area, identifying many songbirds and plants along the trail, and discussing local geology and ecology. The trail is a two mile round trip offering spectacular views of the Bighorn Basin. The terrain is moderately strenuous, with elevation ranging from 6,200 to 6,800 feet. Hikers will meet at the Cody Kmart parking lot, 2121 17th St. at 8 a.m. and caravan 15 miles north on Highway 120 to Chief Joseph Highway, then 10 miles west to Natural Corral. The event is free and participants will get a chance to win a variety of prizes. Hikers are reminded to bring water, a sack lunch, and sunscreen, wear clothing appropriate for the weather, and hiking boots. Binoculars and cameras are also a good idea.
