West Antelope II Draft EIS Available:
Public Hearing set for March 24, 2008
The West Antelope II Coal Lease Application draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) is now available for review from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Casper Field Office.
BLM is considering issuing a coal lease as a result of an April 6, 2005, application made by Antelope Coal Company (Antelope) to lease the federal coal in the West Antelope II coal tract. This tract is located in Converse and Campbell counties and is near the Antelope Mine, approximately 50 miles north of Douglas, Wyo.
The DEIS analyzes and discloses to the public direct, indirect, and cumulative environmental impacts of issuing a federal coal lease in the Wyoming portion of the Powder River Basin. The DEIS is not a decision document. Its purpose is to inform the public of the impacts of issuing a federal coal lease in the Wyoming portion of the Powder River Basin.
A formal public hearing will be held at 7 p.m. on March 24, 2008, at the Best Western Douglas Inn, 1450 Riverbend Drive, Douglas, Wyoming. The purpose of the hearing is to receive comments on the proposed coal lease sale, on the fair market value, and on the maximum economic recovery of the Federal coal resources.
BLM will accept public comments on the DEIS through April 8, 2008. Please address questions, comments, or concerns to the Casper Field Office, Bureau of Land Management, Attn: Sarah Bucklin, 2987 Prospector Drive, Casper, Wyoming, 82604, by facsimile (fax) to (307)261-7587, or send e-mail comments to the attention of Sarah Bucklin at casper_wymail@blm.gov.
