U.S. Geological Survey personnel make discharge measurements through the ice on the Red River of the North at Grand Forks, North Dakota, on February 13, 2003, using an ice sled and an ice meter attached to a specialized 30-pound sounding weight.

The ice was more than 2 feet thick and the air temperature was about 15 degrees Fahrenheit. A total of 25 holes were drilled through the ice and equipment was lowered into the water to measure 25 different sections of the overall river cross section.
