Measuring peak streamflow

U.S. Geological Survey personnel measure peak streamflow for the Turtle River gaging station at Turtle River State Park near Arvilla, North Dakota

The tractor uses hydraulics to raise and lower a 200-pound sounding weight with a velocity meter.  The sounding weight is suspended below the velocity meter to keep the meter stationary in the swift current.
