The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) funded the development of this compendium, which identifies selected data sources (both electronic and hard copy) key to population-based public health planning.

Background

This compendium was originally used as a resource tool for participants attending AHCPR-sponsored workshops of its User Liaison Program (ULP) on "Promoting Public Health in an Era of Change," "Tools of Policy Analysis and Research," and "Integrated State Health Information Systems." Although it was initially developed for workshops, the compendium was updated and expanded to include new or revised sections (e.g., the Health Care Financing Administration's April 1996 Resource Guide; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Information Network for Public Health Officials, the World Wide Web addresses for State Health Agencies and Related Organizations, etc.).

Contents

Information on data sources in the compendium is from the following Federal agencies or organizations: Consumer Product Safety Commission; Department of Commerce; Department of Health and Human Services and its components, such as AHCPR, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA); Department of Justice; Department of Labor; and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Non-Federal organizations who contributed information to this compendium include the American Academy of Pediatrics; Health Insurance Association of America; and the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO).

In addition, the compendium contains the following appendix materials: Bureau of the Census State Data/Information Centers; Agency Heads and Contact Persons for Designated State Centers for Health Statistics; Overview of Table of Health Care Financing Administration Data Files; CDC Information Network for Public Health Officials (INPHO); and the World Wide Web addresses for State Health Agencies and Related Organizations.
