Here is what the Web site says: NAAL health literacy score. The health literacy score is derived from 26 health-related questions embedded in the participant's primary literacy assessment (either the main NAAL or ALSA), plus 10 health-related questions included in the enhanced background questionnaire. The health questions assess the ability of adults to apply literacy skills to understand health-related materials and forms. Health organizations can use the health literacy information to identify target audiences for specific types of health information, the literacy level at which materials for these audiences should be written, and the best ways of reaching them.
