Managed Care & Persons with Disabilities & Chronic Illnesses

Roundtable Discussion

Future Issues & Challenges

Moderator:

Lawrence Bartlett, Ph.D., Health Systems Research, Inc.

In this closing session, participants raised and discussed a number of key issues and questions central to the challenge of designing and implementing programs and policies that will help ensure that today's and tomorrow's health care system will be responsive to the needs of persons with disabilities.

Among the questions discussed were the following:

  • How should State and local officials and other policymakers monitor and modify, as appropriate, the programs and policies that they have put in place?
  • What are the anticipated future trends and issues within the health care system that should be considered in designing today's programs?
  • To what extent do the programs and policies being established today actually reflect a vision of what we want our health care system to look like in the future?

In talking about these issues, participants also discussed ways in which State and local governments could play leadership roles in helping achieve desired system goals. The activities discussed focused not only on the design and implementation of public sector programs and policies but also on ways in which States could help improve the system's responsiveness for persons with disabilities who have private sector health care coverage or who are uninsured.

Current as of November 1997
