Comments

The definition used by the HIV/AIDS Surveillance System for an AIDS case is provided by the CDC. Data are adjusted for reporting delay.

Data are age adjusted to the 2000 standard population. Age-adjusted rates are weighted sums of age-specific rates. Resident death data are based on information from death certificates filed in the 50 States and the District of Columbia.

The taxonomy of the PCP organism has been changed; pneumocystis jiroveci refers to the distinct species that infects humans. The abbreviation PCP is still used to designate pneumocystis pneumonia.
