SUBJECT: 2000 Senior Executive Development Series
This memorandum announces a Fiscal Year 2000 Senior Executive Development Series. The Attorney General, who is sponsoring the seminars through the Special Projects Fund has stated, “The Department of Justice’s commitment to excellence requires that we continue to develop the expertise of our executives”. This series provides all Department of Justice Senior Executive Service (SES) members, senior managers, and supervisors at GS-14 and above, an excellent opportunity to learn the latest management thinking that will lead us into the future. Please distribute this memo and the attached information to all your SES members, managers and supervisors at GS-14 and above.
There is no-cost for attending the seminars. The deadline for registration is two weeks prior to the scheduled seminar date. Executives, senior managers and supervisors, who meet the eligibility criteria, of GS-14 and above, may register via E-mail with alejandro.m.bartning@usdoj.gov or by calling (202) 616-3619. The seminars will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis to the specified number of registrants. All confirmed participants will be notified when they are registered to attend.

Please Note: Senior Executive Service members are especially invited to attend the morning session which will focus on personal leadership assessment. The afternoon session is primarily for managers and supervisors in GS-14/15 positions and will focus on strategies for career advancement.

Where: National Place Building, Room 1160
Topics: This one-day seminar focuses on how DOJ and its component agencies develop budget requests; who reviews the requests; and how the requests are reviewed for what ultimately becomes the President’s Budget. The interaction between the components, the Department, the Office of Management and Budget, the White House, and Congress will be discussed. The course also covers how Congress enacts the budget, and the basics of how component agencies turn the budget request into an operating plan after the Congress and the President agree on the budget.
