MEMORANDUM FOR BUREAU PERSONNEL OFFICERS, EXECUTIVE OFFICERS, AND TRAINING OFFICERS

SUBJECT:     2000 Senior Executive Development Series

This memorandum announces a Fiscal Year 2000 Senior Executive Development Series. The Attorney General, who is sponsoring the seminars through the Special Projects Fund has stated, “The Department of Justice’s commitment to excellence requires that we continue to develop the expertise of our executives”. This series provides all Department of Justice Senior Executive Service (SES) members, senior managers, and supervisors at GS-14 and above, an excellent opportunity to learn the latest management thinking that will lead us into the future. Please distribute this memo and the attached information to all your SES members, managers and supervisors at GS-14 and above.

There is no-cost for attending the seminars. The deadline for registration is two weeks prior to the scheduled seminar date. Executives, senior managers and supervisors, who meet the eligibility criteria, of GS-14 and above, may register via E-mail with alejandro.m.bartning@usdoj.gov or by calling (202) 616-3619. The seminars will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis to the specified number of registrants. All confirmed participants will be notified when they are registered to attend.

This no-cost session is offered Department-wide to executives, managers and supervisors, GS-14 and above.

Date/Time:   Tuesday, March 14, 2000, 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

This no-cost session is offered Department-wide to executives, senior managers, and supervisors, GS-14 and above.

Date/Time:   Thursday, March 30, 2000, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Who:  Robert Franco, Office of Personnel Management

Where:  Office of Justice Programs Conference Center and Library, 3rd Floor, 810 7th Street, NW.

Topics:   Self-assessment tool, which covers all 27 leadership competencies; Understanding the Leadership Competencies; Career Development Strategies; Understanding the Senior Executive Service selection process; and Effective personal marketing techniques for personal advancement.

This 2000 Executive Development Series workshop focuses on building and enhancing competencies in Strategic Thinking, Problem Solving, Human Resources Management, and Interpersonal Skills. See Attachment 3 for workshop agenda and note.

Details:   The deadline for registration is March 16, 2000. Registrants will be required to complete a self-administered assessment tool, prior to the workshop. "The Department of Justice Budget Seminar"

This no-cost session is offered Department-wide to executives, managers and supervisors, GS-14 and above.

Date/Time:   Wednesday, April 5, 2000, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Who:  Eugene Schied, Assistant Director, Budget Staff, Justice Management Division

Where:  National Place Building, Room 1160

Topics:  This one-day seminar focuses on how DOJ and its component agencies develop budget requests; who reviews the requests; and how the requests are reviewed for what ultimately becomes the President’s Budget. The interaction between the components, the Department, the Office of Management and Budget, the White House, and Congress will be discussed. The course also covers how Congress enacts the budget, and the basics of how component agencies turn the budget request into an operating plan after the Congress and the President agree on the budget.
