MEMORANDUM FOR OFFICES, BOARDS, AND DIVISIONS TRAINING REPRESENTATIVES

SUBJECT:      FY 2002 Department of the Interior Speakers Series - A Special Bonus Event

This memorandum and attached information announces a special bonus event at the U.S. Department of the Interior Speakers Series. The Department of Justice (DOJ), in partnership with a consortium of Federal agencies led by the Department of the Interior, is sponsoring this Series. DOJ is participating in this series for the second year, and attendees will be asked to submit feedback for evaluation purposes. Please distribute the memo and attached information to your Offices, Boards, and Divisions'(OBD) employees at the GS-11 level and above.

The special seminar in the FY 2002 series, with guest speaker, Neil Bernstein, PhD., on the topic of his published book, "How to Keep Your Teenager Out of Trouble and What to Do If You Can't," will be held at Yates Auditorium, Main Interior Building 1849 C Street, N.W., Washington, DC, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on October 23, 2001. Photo identification will be required for entrance to the Department of the Interior Building.

There is no-cost for attending the seminar. The deadline for registration is two weeks prior to the scheduled seminar. Eligible participants can register by sending an e-mail to alejandro.m.bartning@usdoj.gov or by phoning Alex Bartning, on (202) 616-3619. The seminar will be filled on a first-register, first-attend basis with the first 28 OBD registrants eligible to receive a copy of the book at no cost. Up to 100 employees in the OBDs may register to attend, and printed tickets will be distributed. OBD registrants beyond the first 28 will have the option of purchasing a copy of the book at a cost of $12.95 plus tax at the event. All confirmed participants will be notified when they are registered, and a printed ticket will be issued, through you, to each confirmed attendee.

The Department of the Interior and the Government-wide consortium of partnering agencies are pleased to announce a special event for the Career Balance and Diversity series.

Dr. Neil Bernstein, a clinical psychologist specializing in teen behavior will present practical insights and suggestions from his new book "How to Keep Your Teen Ager out of Trouble and What to do if You Can't." For more than 20 years, Dr. Bernstein has provided expert help to teens and parents. Dr. Bernstein will focus his presentation on the importance of communication and provide guidance on what are typical teen behaviors and which behaviors are dangerous. He will also provide a set of suggested "skill builders" for communication and a sample dialogue to use in opening the lines of communication with a teenager.

The event is free.
