MEMORANDUM FOR BUREAU PERSONNEL OFFICERS, EXECUTIVE OFFICERS AND TRAINING OFFICERS

FROM:            Debra M. Tomchek
                         Director, Human Resources

SUBJECT:      DOJ Executive Development Program Series "Aging Workforce: The Impact on Organizations"

This memorandum and attached information announces the continuation of the FY 2003 Department of Justice Executive Development Program Series. The seminar will feature James Weil, a nationally recognized expert on aging issues and the impact on organizations. Statistics show that the aging of the workforce is a very real business issue, and if present trends continue, America will experience a labor shortage of 4.8 million workers in 10 years and almost half of the federal government's 1.8 million employees will be eligible to retire within five years. In addition, as aging employees, we have a completely separate set of needs and issues that we are dealing with -- including our own health and wellness issues, caring for older loved ones, and retirement planning.

The presenter James Weil, is recognized as one of the nation's foremost authorities on issues of business and aging and serves as LifeCare's Managing Director of Successful Aging. Prior to joining LifeCare, Mr. Weil held senior positions in marketing, sales, and strategic planning, and he established MetLife's Long-Term Care Insurance business. The content of this program will focus on the competencies contained in the Executive Core Qualifications regarding leading people and business acumen.

This session will be held on June 17, 2003, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Great Hall at Main DOJ. Please distribute this memo and the attached information to all of your Senior Executive Service members, as well as managers and supervisors at the GS-14/15 levels.

There is no cost for attending the seminar. The deadline for registration is June 5, 2003, or until the seminar is full. SES members, senior managers and supervisors, GS-14 level and above, may register via e-mail by sending your request to: Leadership.Development@USDOJ.gov.
