Having Surgery? What You Need to Know

Program Description:

This audio program features current news and information from the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) for the week of 1/18/2006.

Interview with AHRQ Director Doctor Carolyn Clancy, discussing the new brochure, Having Surgery? What You Need to Know.

  • Each year more than 15 million Americans have surgery. Most of these operations are not emergencies, which gives the patients time to gather information about their procedures. AHRQ has released a new booklet to help patients make informed decisions when their treatment plans may include a surgical procedure. The brochure, called Having Surgery? What You Need to Know, suggests questions for patients to ask their primary care doctors and surgeons about alternatives to surgery as well as preparation for and recovery after surgery. The publication is part of a series of health care resources from AHRQ to help people be more active in making informed decisions, and more satisfied with their treatment. The program features an interview with AHRQ Director Dr. Carolyn Clancy to discuss the new brochure.
