Galt, Kimberly
Institution: Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska
Duration: 2 years (2006-2008)
Total Award: Approximately $500,000
Project Description: The goal of the Creighton University Health Services
Research Development Program (CHRP) is to develop both the faculty and infrastructure
necessary to achieve and maintain a long-term, sustainable health services
research effort. Prior to the BRIC application submission, the CHRP team had
finalized their vision for the program and contacted outside experts and
consultants, as well as solidified community and government partnerships in Nebraska and South Dakota. Further, they developed university-wide administrative and
faculty support. For their research project, Creighton is exploring the
current use, intention to use, and acceptance of hand-held technologies and
their clinical support applications available by primary care physicians in
mostly rural areas. The major aims of the project are:
- Develop skills and abilities of
faculty to conduct health services research within CHRP.
- Develop infrastructure to improve
capacity and support the CHRP research faculty to sustain competitive funding
in health services research (HSR).
- Prepare nationally competitive
application for funding within the two years of the grant.
- Develop processes that support
interdisciplinary HSR teams.
- Develop processes for research
dissemination.
Progress to Date:
- The Mentees have completed a
series of training and development activities.
- Weekly project meetings are held
to discuss development and research activities.
- Additional resources to support
the faculty have been developed including an electronic server storage and
exchange area to support BRIC team members.
- Interdisciplinary research teams
have been formed.
- The literature review for the PDA
project has been completed and research design and methodology issues refined.

Madhavan, S. Suresh
Institution: West Virginia University, Morgantown, West Virginia
Duration: 2 years (2006-2008)
Total Award: Approximately $500,000
Project Description: This BRIC grant will establish a Center for
Excellence that produces on-going rigorous research in health services and
health outcomes that focus on reducing health disparities and improving the
health of the people of West Virginia. By developing the research
infrastructure, this effort will create a West Virginia Collaborative Health
Outcomes Research of Therapies and Services (CoHORTS). This infrastructure
will and the resulting resources will provide timely and critically-needed
region-specific research information to patients, providers, policymakers, and
payers to improve the quality of and access to health care in WV. The aims of
this BRIC are:
- Create a data repository of
various State and Federal health care data to serve as a resource and catalyst
for HSR and outcomes research.
- Develop collaborative
relationships the bring together health services researchers to stimulate
multidisciplinary research and develop a plan for new faculty recruitment to
sustain long-term growth.
- Establish a mentoring program for
junior faculty to become more competitive for Federally-funded grants.

Duration: 2 years (2006-2008)
Total Award: Approximately $500,000
Project Description: This investigation will expand and strengthen HSR
capacity within the sate of Arkansas through the creation of the Arkansas
Consortium for Health Services Research. The Consortium will bring together
multiple research groups and health organizations within the state to facility
the conduct of applied research that elucidates pathways for improving the
quality, efficiency, accessibility, and equity of health care. The primary
objectives of the grant are:
- Develop and maintain
research-quality databases from several under-utilized State data sources.
- Develop multidisciplinary research
mentorship and skill-building opportunities.
- Develop and administer an
intramural HSR 'seed grant' program to provide dedicated programming time and
some funding to launch pilot studies using the Consortium resources.
- Develop a multi-institutional,
multidisciplinary advisory board to guide the activities of the Consortium.

Duration: 2 years (2006-2008)
Total Award: Approximately $500,000
Project Description: This BRIC project intends to develop a viable and
sustainable rural and frontier health services research program within the
University of North Dakota Center for Rural health (CRH). The long term
objective is to have this research infrastructure work to improve the quality,
safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care for Americans residing in
rural and frontier areas. Nationally-recognized rural health experts will
serve as mentors for junior faculty and partnerships have been developed with
established rural health research center/institutes. The aims of this research
are:
- Develop and build a frontier
health services research center that will be sustainable after completion of
the BRIC grant.
- Develop health services research
projects that will improve the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness
of health care for all Americans residing in rural a frontier settings.
- Examine factors impacting
inter-hospital transfers and patient outcomes in rural and frontier hospitals
in North Dakota.
Progress to Date:
- The BRIC team hosted a kick-off
meeting which was well-attended by a diverse group of multidisciplinary
researchers. The meeting focused on building a common research agenda on rural
health care quality and identifying strategies for collaboration.
- Much of the first year was spent
on requesting and obtaining data files from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and Blue Cross/Blue Shield.
- The structured interview
instrument for the inter-hospital transfer project is under development.
