There are five Junior Badges that can be earned at the museum. They are Earth Connections, Wildlife, Water Wonders, Finding Your Way, and Building Bridges. Haunted Trail Brave souls wishing to walk the Haunted Trail may begin their journey at the Carlyle McDonald’s between 6:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., where a wagon ride will transport visitors to the trail. The cost of admission is $5.00 with all proceeds benefiting the 2009 Carlyle Lake Fireworks Spectacular. The Haunted Trail is sponsored by the Carlyle Lake Chamber of Commerce and the Carlyle Optimist Club, in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Carlyle Lake.

National Public Land Day
Lake Shelbyville is planning a high water cleanup in the Dam West Recreation Area and the removal of unwanted woody vegetation in the Camp Camfield Environmental Area as part of National Public Lands Day. National Public Lands Day
Volunteers are welcome to gather at the Mark Twain Lake Frank Russell Recreation Area Pond Sept. 27 at 8 a.m. Work will focus on wildlife habitat management activities in the recreation area, including tree planting, food plot planting, and prairie grass plantings. Halloween Decorating/Walk
If you crave entertainment this event is for you. Decorate your campsite, your kids, yourself and your dog and let the fun begin. The Indian Creek Campground becomes Halloween Central for the weekend. To reserve a site for decorating call (573) 735-4097 starting at 8 a.m. on June 1, 2008. For the safety of the many walkers, there will be no vehicle traffic through the East Loop from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Campers arriving during these hours are asked to park in the hike-in camping parking lot.

National Public Lands Day
Rend Lake will be hosting its 22nd Annual Rend Lake Cleanup on October 11. Volunteers are invited to come out and help clean up trash along all the roads entering the lake. Registration is from 8-9 a.m. at the Rend Lake Visitor Center. Volunteers will be assigned to work a particular area from 9-11 a.m. An awards ceremony will be at noon. Rend Lake Cleanup
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Rend Lake invites you to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the
Civilian Conservation Corps by participating in a day of community service at the Rend Lake Cleanup.
The cleanup event will begin at 8:00 a.m. at the Rend Lake Visitor Center, located east of the main
dam, and wrap up with a closing ceremony/prize raffle at 12:00 p.m.
Get your family, church, organization, or scout group together and join us for a fun day of volunteering as we pick up litter along the roadways and shoreline surrounding Rend Lake.
Pre-registration is recommended but not required. Pre-Registration information can be obtained by calling

Christmas Tree Recycling Program Bundling and placement of the trees will be accomplished in mid-March by Corps of Engineers employees, Illinois Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologists and volunteers. Volunteers with boats or fishing/outdoor organizations are encouraged to help place the trees in the designated locations. Anyone wishing to volunteer or wanting more information should contact Mike Edwards at the Rend Lake Project Office at 618-724-2493.
Old Greenville Black Powder Rendezvous
Travel back in time to relive history as you see tepees, lodges and people in primitive dress. Smell the smoke of open campfires and freshly shot gunpowder. Enjoy riding to and from the event site in a wagon pulled by a team of mules. Traders will also be abundant with numerous hand-crafted items and other goods available for purchase. This event is located just off U.S. Highway 67 at the Greenville Recreation Area, two miles south of Greenville, Mo. Admission is free to the public.

Mobility Impaired Deer Hunt The Mobility Impaired Deer Hunt is an annual event held at the Wappapello Lake. The hunt is designed to permit hunters with severe mobility impairment an opportunity for a quality hunting opportunity in a safe environment. Applications for the hunt are available and accepted in August of each year, with drawing and notification in September. Five positions are available for a two-day hunt held during the November segment of the Missouri modern gun firearms deer season. This is not a managed hunt, nor is it a bonus deer. Zone regulations regarding deer permits and deer hunting apply. All hunters, regardless of age, are required to provide proof of completion of a certified hunter education course. Blinds are provided for participants, and the may be accompanied on the hunt. Persons accompanying successful applicants are not allowed to hunt, or possess a firearm.

Festival of Lights Auto Tour
This Christmas festivity is held in the Redman Creek Campground. The event will be open from dusk til 9 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights through December 14th. From December 19 through December 28 the event will be open nightly from dusk til 9 p.m. Businesses, groups, organizations and individuals are encouraged to join the holiday festivities by decorating a campsite. The event is partnered with the Wappapello Lions Club and admission is free to the public.

Army Engineers were responsible for building hundreds of navigational aids along America’s coasts, lakes, rivers, and harbors; including one of the nation’s most beloved lighthouses. In 1868, Congress approved a measure to rebuild a lighthouse at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The original structure, which had stood on the outer banks for seventy years, had proven to be so ineffective as to warrant the construction of an entirely new lighthouse.
