What earthquakes are shown on the map?
Maps are updated within 5 minutes of an earthquake and once an hour on the hour (note that a further delay of up to 5 minutes may take place while the page is uploaded to our webserver).
An automatic, computer-generated, epicenter is shown if an earthquake a) has an automatic preliminary magnitude exceeding 1.7, b) is recorded by at least 10 seismic stations, c) is less than 80 km deep. Automatic, unreviewed, locations must meet 2 further quality criteria to appear: d) location uncertainty less than 10 km, e) timing uncertainty (rms misfit) of 1.5 s or less.
After review by an analyst, earthquakes as small as magnitude 1.0 or with depths greater than 80 km are also posted. The review status of an earthquake may be found by clicking on an epicenter.
Earthquakes more than two weeks old are removed.
Try to reload this page if you do not have the most current map.
