Academic ADL Co-Lab Releases the "SCOurse"

October 27, 2003

The Academic ADL Co-Lab's "SCOurse" is a collection of Sharable Content Objects (SCOs) intended to help individuals and institutions learn about ADL's Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM).  The SCOurse is a collection of sharable objects that may be combined in many ways for various audiences.  These SCOs represent the nucleus of what is envisioned to be a more comprehensive set of learning materials about the SCORM.  In addition to the value of its content, this growing body of work is in itself a valuable testbed for experimenting with creating, using and reusing standards-based e-learning content.

This week marks the first ever release of the SCOurse as a downloadable SCORM package.  The popular SCOurse has been available online at http://www.academiccolab.org/learn since December 2002. With this downloadable SCORM package, the e-learning community is able to examine the SCO structure and SCORM implementation.  In this form, the SCOurse may also be imported into various learning environments for testing purposes.  It should be understood, however, that while the SCOurse is SCORM conformant, it does not necessarily reflect the only or best way of creating conformant content.  The SCORM provides a reference model for making interoperable Web-based e-learning content, but does not specify a single way of developing content.  Any specific implementation will require its own design approach, architecture and toolset, dictated by the specific project and by the preferences, skills and resources of the developer.

The SCOurse is copyrighted by the Academic ADL Co-Lab, and is being released "Some rights reserved" under a Creative Commons license.

In addition to the ability to use this SCORM package and its components within various learning environments that support the SCORM, the Academic ADL Co-Lab has included a "Viewer" page to preview the content in the absence of a host environment.  Using this viewer bypasses the SCORM functionality of the SCOurse so that errors attempting to communicate are not encountered.

The Academic ADL Co-Lab would appreciate knowing how the SCOurse is modified and used.  Please provide the Academic ADL Co-Lab with links to, or information on, use of the SCOurse.  Any updates will be posted to http://www.academiccolab.org/learn, where the Academic ADL Co-Lab will also attempt to maintain a directory of derivative works.

The Academic ADL Co-lab would appreciate any other feedback or suggestions regarding this work.  Please direct your comments to feedback@academiccolab.org.
