FEDMAP Funding
Each spring/summer, proposals for new and continuing geologic mapping projects are developed and submitted following guidelines provided in the USGS Geology Annual Science Plan.
During late summer/early fall, these proposals are evaluated by a FEDMAP Review Panel, which includes a representative from the
- Association of American State Geologists, (AASG)
- Dept. of the Interior National Park Service (NPS),
- Dept. of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS),
- USGS Water Resources Discipline (WRD)
- Three regional USGS Earth Surface Processes Teams (Eastern, Central, Western).
On the basis of these evaluations and the amount of available funding from Congress, the NCGMP Program Coordinator allocates funds to each project as early as possible within the new fiscal year.
In FY 2006, the NCGMP is funding all or parts of 29 FEDMAP projects. These projects include four geochronology laboratories and the National Geologic Map Database. There currently are geologic mapping projects in 30 states, Canada, and the Northern Mariana Islands. In addition to NCGMP funds, many USGS FEDMAP projects also are funded by other USGS programs, Federal and local agencies, and universities.
