LVEW, located on the resurgent dome, was orignially conceived to investigate the potential for near-magnatic temperature energy extraction in Long Valley caldera. The well was drilled to a depth of 2.3 km in 1991, and deepened in 1998 to 3.0 km. Relatively slow drilling rates in metamorphic roof pendant rocks coupled with funding limitations resulted in termination of drilling at that point. Additional information is available at the ICDP (International Continental Scientific Drilling Program) page for the Long Valley Coring Project.
