National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health Region VIII Demonstration Project
University of Utah Health Sciences Center

The University of Utah Health Sciences Center (UUHSC) in Salt Lake City was awarded a Region VIII National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health (CoE) Demonstration Project contract. The CoE program implements a national model for comprehensive, integrated, multi- and inter-disciplinary approaches to women’s health care. While there are many educational resources, services and research facilities available in women’s health at UUHSC, there is a need for a collaborative and integrated program. The UUHSC is the only academic medical center in the Intermountain West, an area inhabited by 5 million people that encompasses the states of Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana, sections of eastern Nevada, and northern Arizona. Utah has unique minority populations which have increased at an accelerated rate. Under this CoE Demonstration Project, the CoE Region VIII Demonstration Center Director, Kathleen Digre, M.D., proposes to lead the coordination of promotion and retention of women faculty, advancement of professional education, improvement in community outreach and education, advancement of and access to clinical services and improved women’s health research for the women who reside in Utah and environs.

HHS awarded three new CoEs at the University of Missouri - Kansas City, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and West Virginia University Health Sciences Center. Another $125,000 each for two new CoE Region VIII Demonstration Project(s) to develop a new rural framework for the CoE program at the University of South Dakota and the University of North Dakota. This new program strengthens the reach of the CoE program across the Nation, especially into rural frontier areas.

HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson announced the creation of six new National Centers of Excellence in Women's Health, model academic health centers that will provide integrated and comprehensive women's health services across the United States. HHS will provide a total of nearly $1 million to support the six new centers, some of which will focus on rural women's health.
