U.S. Department
of the Interior Sediment Loads in Canals 18, 23, and 24 in Southeastern FloridaWilliam A. J. Pitt Jr.ABSTRACT Suspended-sediment concentrations and suspended-sediment discharges were determined in selected canals in St. Lucie, Martin, and Palm Beach counties in southeastern Florida. Sediment rating curves were developed to relate water discharge to sediment concentration at three sites sampled. An evaluation of the concentration and sediment loads shows that larger amounts of suspended sediment were being carried into the St. Lucie River estuary than were being carried into the Loxahatchee River estuary. Peat, muck and soils in areas
drained for agricultural planting and citrus cultivation are readily carried
by runoff waters into the major canals that traverse the region.
