MODIS/Terra+Aqua BRDF/Model Quality 16-Day L3 Global 500m SIN Grid V005
MCD43A2
Unlike MODIS V004 MOD43, the V005 BRDF, Albedo, and NBAR products are known as MCD43. Whenever possible, both Terra and Aqua data are used in the generation of the new V005 products, providing the highest probability for quality input data and designating them as "MCD," meaning "Combined," products.
The image above is extracted from the first of four Science Data Sets in the BRDF/Albedo Quality product. It describes basic QA for BRDF/Albedo data acquired between February 26 and March 13, 2001 over Central America including the Yucatan Peninsula, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and some of Costa Rica (h09v07).
Black pixels are filled due to persistent clouds or deep ocean coverage. Green pixels were processed with a full BRDF inversion model and are considered the highest quality. Yellow pixels were processed with a magnitude inversion model and are still good quality, but there were not sufficient best quality observations to perform a full inversion and so supplemental values were used from an archetypal BRDF parameter database.
V005 Change Points of Interest:
500-m product now available
Quality information stored as a separate product (MCD43A2) in simplified form
Local Solar Noon changed from 5-degree steps to degrees
Reduced file volume: internal compression
Phased production strategy: Produced every 8 days with 16-days of acquisition (ie., production period 2001001 includes acquisition between Days 001 and 016, production period 2001009 includes acquisition between Days 009 and 024)
Product Description
The MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) BRDF/Albedo Quality product (MCD43A2) describes the overall condition of the other BRDF and Albedo products. MCD43A2 data are 16-day composites at 500-meter spatial resolution provided as a level-3 gridded product in the Sinusoidal projection and include albedo quality, snow conditions, ancillary information, and inversion information.
Both Terra and Aqua data are used in the generation of this product, providing the highest probability for quality input data and designating it as an “MCD,” meaning “Combined,” product.
Version-5 MODIS/Terra+Aqua BRDF/Albedo products are Validated Stage 1, meaning that accuracy has been estimated using a small number of independent measurements obtained from selected locations and time periods and ground-truth/field program efforts. Although there may be later improved versions, these data are ready for use in scientific publications.
