Project Description: The project has two main goals:

  1. To use focus groups to identify the reasons why parents are unable to obtain health insurance for their uninsured children, with an emphasis on Latinos.
  2. To conduct a randomized control trial to evaluate whether case managers are more effective than traditional methods in insuring uninsured children.

Career Goals: Dr. Flores career goals are to become a recognized leader in child health services research through understanding as an investigator, clinician, mentor, and advocate. He has endeavored to conduct research that has the potential to have an immediate impact on children's health, particularly minority, poor, and underserved by the health care system. He will refine his research skills by conducting the focus groups and randomized controlled trial (RCT), attending regular meetings with senior advisory team, completing coursework, mentoring minority health services researchers, and developing and using collaborative policy links.

Progress to Date: Dr. Flores is Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Epidemiology & Health Policy, at the Medical College of Wisconsin. The focus group and RCT have been completed and manuscripts are under review. The 12-month followup of the RCT research is expected to be completed in 2004. Dr. Flores has had several publications as a result of this research.

Future Plans: The research team will continue the monitoring of outcomes and data entry/coding/cleaning. Manuscript preparation will also continue. Dr. Flores will continue meeting with his advisors and mentoring minority health services researchers.
