Under Secretary of State Hughes Headlines Utah Women’s Conference

Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Karen P. Hughes is traveling to Salt Lake City, Utah on Friday, October 12, 2007, to deliver the keynote address at the 23rd Annual Utah Women’s Conference, “Discovering the Diversity and Unity of Women.”

The conference, hosted by Senator Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and his wife Elaine, will be held at the Grand America Hotel. It will also feature workshops on important topics of interest to women including: domestic violence, identity theft, understanding cancer, investment basics, and health. Approximately 2,000 women are expected to attend the conference.

In announcing the program, Senator Hatch said, “Ambassador Hughes has traveled the globe confronting first-hand the challenges America faces in winning the war on terror, and promoting peace. She has been a powerful example for women everywhere as she has juggled important responsibilities in government with her desire to rear a family.”

Ambassador Hughes will highlight new public diplomacy outreach to women around the world, including breast cancer initiatives in the Middle East and Latin America, the Jordanian Business Women’s Summit, the FORTUNE Outstanding Women Business Leaders’ mentoring program, as well as micro-grant and literacy programs.

To register for the conference, please contact conference staff at (801) 413-9133.

Media interested in covering the conference should contact Heather Barney, Utah Communications Director for Senator Hatch, at (801) 524-4380.
