Death of Burmese Dissident in Custody

The United States is deeply troubled by reports of the death of Burmese dissident Win Shwe during interrogation by Burmese authorities. Win Shwe, a member of the National League for Democracy, was arrested on September 26, 2007. Burmese authorities reportedly cremated his body at the detention center where he was interrogated. We continue to receive reports that detainees are being held in deplorable conditions and are subject to abuse. We renew our calls on the regime to release all political prisoners and, until they are released, to allow access by international humanitarian organizations to all detainees.
