Handbook of groundwater remediation using permeable reactive barriers--Applications to radionuclides, trace metals, and nutrients

Foreward

Mining, milling, refining, and industrial uses of metals, coal, petroleum products, and nuclear fuels have left a legacy of groundwater contamination. With populations increasing and groundwater resources becoming fully allocated, groundwater remediation is becoming paramount to the health and productivity of industrial society. Extraction and treatment of contaminated groundwater is effective in some situations; however, the costs are often prohibitive. Although groundwater remediation technology is still in its infancy, research and field demonstrations are beginning to show promise for more economic removal of contaminants. Permeable reactive barriers are an emerging technology that offers the potential of passive, low-cost approaches to reaching groundwater cleanup goals.

The publication of this book is timely because sufficient hydrologic and geochemical data are now becoming available to evaluate permeable reactive barrier performance more thoroughly. The information presented in this book encompasses a wide variety of reactive materials, design alternatives, flow systems, and evaluation approaches representing the diversity of intellectual endeavor devoted to this topic. Results of a number of bench- and field-scale projects are presented that provide real-world examples on how various hydrologic and geochemical techniques can be used to assess design and performance issues associated with permeable reactive barriers. Information contained in this book will be of use to private sector consultants, university and government researchers, and policy makers dealing with all phases of permeable reactive barriers, including fundamental science, design, construction, and monitoring and performance evaluation.
