The Role of Partnerships

Second Annual Meeting of Child Health Services Researchers

The Second Annual Meeting of Child Health Services Researchers, held on June 27, 2000, in Los Angeles, highlighted the role of partnerships in advancing the field and in increasing its impact on the health and well being of children. The meeting moved forward from the conceptual frameworks established at the 1999 meeting, and sought to address the goal of identifying gaps in knowledge in child health services research (CHSR) and between knowledge and practice in children's healthcare.

The meeting was co-sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the American Academy of Nursing (AAN), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the Ambulatory Pediatric Association (APA), the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI). This summary of the meeting was prepared for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) by Health Systems Research, Inc.

Overview

Partnerships between disciplines, between research and practice settings, and between individuals at all levels of research will be necessary to continue to build a child health services research agenda and to ensure its relevance to health care delivery and practice. This central message was introduced in the keynote address by Robert Brook, M.D., Sc.D., Vice President of RAND Health, and it emerged throughout the afternoon during eight breakout sessions centered around three themes:

• Getting Started in Child Health Services Research.
• Advance Models and Methods.
• Emerging Issues in Children's Healthcare.
