Turkey's Decision to Assume Command of International Security Assistance ForceWe greatly appreciate and welcome Turkey’s announcement today that it will assume command of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan for a period of six months.
This decision demonstrates Turkey’s steadfast commitment and willingness to assume a leadership role in the war against terrorism and, in particular, to bring about peace and stability in Afghanistan. The United States is strongly committed to supporting Turkey’s lead role in International Security Assistance Force and is working closely with the Turkish government, the Afghan Interim Authority and others to ensure a successful International Security Assistance Force mission under Turkey’s leadership.
