National Healthcare Quality Report, 2004


The 2004 National Healthcare Quality Report (NHQR) extends the baseline established in the 2003 report for a set of health care quality measures across four dimensions of quality—effectiveness, patient safety, timeliness, and patient centeredness.


The 2004 National Healthcare Quality Report focuses on highlight measures, rather than a broad coverage of all 179 measures in the report.

The 2004 NHQR includes a report and two online appendixes.

The report presents findings, using an expanded chart format, on the effectiveness of health care for nine clinical conditions or care settings—cancer, diabetes, end-stage renal disease, heart disease, HIV and AIDS, maternal and child health, mental health, respiratory diseases, and nursing home and home health care— as well as findings on patient safety, timeliness, and patient centeredness.
