This workshop was designed for administrators, tribal policymakers, and others responsible for planning, developing, and implementing healthcare programs serving American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The workshop was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on June 12-14, 2000.

Overview
Indian healthcare is changing rapidly. Tribal health administrators are dealing with a host of issues their predecessors never had to consider. This workshop was designed to help those responsible for AI/AN healthcare delivery systems take advantage of the opportunities and meet the challenges presented by these changes.
The objectives for participants in this workshop included:
- Measure and identify the community's health needs and monitor a healthcare program's success in meeting those needs.
- Use program resources more effectively through technology and through prevention and disease-management techniques.
- Implement new ideas to build and maintain a workforce that can meet the challenges of evolving healthcare systems.
- Develop more effective partnerships with both State and private entities.
- Identify and pursue funding/resources from public and private sources.
Participants
Workshop participants included tribal council members and legislators, and representatives of tribal health authorities/departments, clinics/health centers, urban Indian programs, Indian health boards, and Indian Health Service (IHS) facilities. Several State liaisons to AI/AN participated, as well as Federal agencies.
AHRQ's User Liaison Program (ULP) disseminates health services research findings in easily understandable and usable formats through interactive workshops. Workshops and other support are planned to meet the needs of Federal, State, and local policymakers, and other health services research users, such as purchasers, administrators, and health plans.
