Conducting Research: Steps to Follow

1. Review the "MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN RESEARCHERS"

2. Prepare a brief draft of your research plan (2-3 pages). Be specific about your research hypotheses and approach.

3. Circulate the draft research plan to the Norman Landfill research team at least one month before you intend to begin data collection. Circulation can be accomplished by forwarding the text to Jason Masoner (jmasoner@usgs.gov). During the period following distribution of the proposed research plan, current researchers may provide feedback and the potential investigator is obligated to ensure that any identified conflicts are resolved before proceeding. Modification of the proposed research plan may be required.

4. Prior to field activities, send a notification of planned field work to the landfill research community. This can be brief but you must be specific about the type of data and samples you intend to collect, the location of the sampling, and any instrumentation you will deploy. The amount of information in the notification and the length of time needed for notification depends on the field work. Downloading a data logger requires no notification, but drilling wells would require a significant notification well in advance (approximately 1 month) of the field effort.

5. Send a summary of your research plan to Jason Masoner for posting on the Web site. This summary should be less than the equivalent of one page of text. Periodically review your summary to ensure it is consistent with your research at Norman Landfill.
