eLearning is a key employee self-service (ESS) application. However, to be an effective employee self-service application, eLearning needs to be infused with the complex daily working environment of employees. Rapid eLearning addresses this need by giving employees short, but frequent opportunities to gain a little business knowledge throughout their normal working activities.
Rapid eLearning poses two challenges. First, organizations need a way to empower employees that are subject matter experts and are closest to the training outages to directly create instructionally sound, multimedia training content. This challenge is being met by rapid eLearning authoring systems such as Macromedia Breeze. The second challenge is to determine how to deliver rapid eLearning to employees in a way that is more integrated with their daily working environment. Too often, rapid eLearning is deployed from a traditional learning management system. The problem is that the learning management system is not where employees do work.
The challenge of integrating disparate data sources and information systems into a single, intuitive interface is being met by enterprise portals. And, as such, portals are becoming the central application in the enterprise. It follows then, that as the portal becomes a central part of employees’ daily working environment, the portal surpasses the traditional LMS as the ideal way to deliver rapid eLearning. knowledgeWorks LMS for Portals is an upcoming product from techniques.org for integrating eLearning capabilities into a portal.
