ADL Role:

Lieutenant-Colonel David Kitchen is a Training Development specialist Officer serving with the Directorate of Training and Education Policy at National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa, Canada. Appointed to lead the Canada ADL Partnership Lab in 2005, Lieutenant-Colonel Kitchen is responsible for promoting the development and adoption of global e-learning standards within the Department of National Defence (DND) and Canadian federal departments. His team conducts research and development into applications of training technologies with a focus on e-learning, and collaborates on the production of sharable content specifications.

Experience:

Prior to his current appointment, Lieutenant-Colonel Kitchen worked with the Defence Learning Network Project – a DND initiative to support continuous learning and leverage advances in e-learning. He was responsible for the corporate level Learning Management System and coordinating the e-learning courseware used by the Department’s Army, Navy, Air Force and civilian personnel.

He has 25 years of experience working in the field of training and education at various bases across Canada and in Europe. As an Armoured Corps Officer in the 1980’s Lieutenant-Colonel Kitchen ran technical user trials on the Leopard Tank, primarily focusing on simulation. During the 1990’s he was a Project Officer for a number of training technology applications, and was responsible for Computer-Based Training Development and Simulator teams including those supporting Air Force CF-18 Fighter Technician training.

Education:

Lieutenant-Colonel Kitchen received a B.Sc. in Life Sciences from Queens University, a M.Ed. in Instructional Technology from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, and is currently writing up his thesis for his Doctorate in Education through the University of Toronto. He is also graduate of the British Army’s Technical Staff College.
