Administration for Children and Families

Mission statement:

The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) is the Federal agency responsible for programs that promote the economic and social well-being of families, children, individuals, and communities. Highlights of the ACF activities include: funding of State, community, and private sector efforts to protect the rights of people with developmental disabilities; promotion of the self-sufficiency of Native American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Basin Tribes and communities; provision of cash assistance to families based on need, income, and resources; provision of child care to low-income working families and funding of State efforts to provide quality child care services for low-income family members who work, train for work, or attend school; child support enforcement; helping States keep families together by funding services to families in crisis; funding a wide range of State, Territory, and tribal services including employment, education, housing, health, and emergency services; funding of foster care and adoption assistance programs; administering the Head Start, Job Opportunities and Basic Skills (JOBS) training, and Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) programs; through the National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect (NCCAN), funding of State, local, university, voluntary organization, and nonprofit agency programs that address the problems of abused and neglected children; funding of State automated systems; advising the President and Secretary of Health and Human Services on concerns, programs, and services for people with mental retardation; funding refugee assistance and repatriation programs; and provision of crisis intervention and family reunification services to runaway and homeless youth and their families.
