U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists are making available an index of existing aerial photographs for the predicted Hurricane Ivan impact area on the northeast coast of the Gulf of Mexico. This valuable tool will eliminate hours spent by resource managers, emergency personnel, and researchers in identifying and finding photographs of areas taken before they were damaged by the powerful hurricane that struck Alabama’s coastline September 16.
These prehurricane photographs cover areas from the mouth of the Mississippi River in Louisiana, the Mississippi Sound and Mobile Bay, Alabama, to Apalachicola Bay, Florida and include barrier islands, estuaries, bays, beaches and the inshore environment most likely to be impacted by hurricane force winds.
To assist with hurricane impact assessment, federal, state and municipal government agencies can access this index on the Internet website (http://gisdata.usgs.net/website/Disaster_Response) maintained by Ron R. Risty, Homeland Security and Natural Disaster Coordinator with the U. S. Geological Survey’s EROS Data Center. The index will also be available at the USGS National Wetlands Research Center Web site at http://www.nwrc.usgs.gov/hurricane/ivan.htm. The actual aerial photography is available in various formats from sources such as the EROS Data Center.
