The United States Geological Survey's National Wetlands Research Center will sponsor the upcoming Alliance for Marine Remote Sensing (AMRS) Workshop, Remote Sensing & Resource Management in Nearshore and Inland Waters, scheduled for Oct. 22-24, in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada.
The workshop will bring together international representatives associated with freshwater resource management. It will also provide a forum for discussing such topics as water quality; new sensor developments; satellite, airborne, land-based and in situ sensors; pollution monitoring; flood monitoring; methodology and analysis techniques; and wetlands.
The workshop is also organized with the cooperation of the Canadian Space Agency/ Agence spatiale canadienne and is cosponsored by the Canada Center for Remote Sensing and Optech, Inc.
The USGS serves the United States by providing reliable scientific information to describe and understand the Earth; minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters; manage water; biological, energy, and mineral resources; and enhance and protect the quality of life.
As part of this service, the National Wetlands Research Center develops and distributes scientific information for understanding the ecology and values needed to manage and restore wetland habitats.
The center develops technologies to aid natural resource managers in determining the status and trends of wetland habitats. These technologies include remote sensing, geographic information systems, and computer models that simulate the influence of environmental change and management activities on wetlands.
Training in the use of advanced technologies is an essential component of the center's effort to enable natural resource managers to monitor complex and rapidly changing wetland environments, in a manner that fosters both feedback and continual improvement.
