Non DoD Schools Program

Welcome to the DoDEA International Schools Links page. This site provides information for DoD families who will be serving in an overseas area where DoDEA does not operate a school. At these locations, DoDEA supports a variety of options for your children ranging from home school programs to private or public schools. General information is provided below and we encourage you to contact the "Non-DoD Schools Program Manager" responsible for your area of assignment as soon as possible to begin the process of registration and application for funding support. Links to each of these managers are provided on this page.

The Non-DoD Schools Program (NDSP) provides support and funding for the education of authorized command-sponsored dependents of military members and DoD civilian employees assigned to overseas areas where no DoD Dependents School is available within the commuting area.

Enrollment eligibility for dependents of DoD personnel assigned to an overseas area is governed by the provisions of DoDEA Regulation 1342.13 this document is a pdf, "Eligibility Requirements for Education of Elementary and Secondary School-age Dependents in Overseas Areas," August 11, 2006, as amended.

  • An eligible dependent is one who has not completed secondary school and who will reach his or her 5th but not 21st birthday by October 31 of the current school year (or March 31 in the southern hemisphere). Children ages three through five with developmental delays and disabilities may be eligible for services if they meet the DoDEA special education criteria.
  • DoDEA Regulation 1035.1 this document is a pdf, "Use of Non-DoD Schools," August 14, 2003, contains the policy, responsibilities, and guidelines for the education of eligible dependents of DoD personnel at overseas locations where there are no DoD schools.
  • Tuition and certain other expenses to defray the education costs are approved by the NDSP Area managers for the eligible dependents of DoD personnel who must attend a non-DoD school.
  • Sponsors MUST obtain approval for tuition and other expenses from the appropriate DoDEA Area office prior to incurring any expense.
  • The amount of financial assistance which may be offered is defined by the Department of State in the Department of State Standardized Regulations (DSSR) (http://www.state.gov/m/a/als/1740.htm).
