Guidance and Counseling

DoDEA's School Counselors provide a comprehensive guidance and counseling program to all students in grades PreK-12. The school guidance program helps build a foundation for life-long learning by assisting students in developing self-respect, awareness of others, and positive learning attitudes. School counselors provide direct and indirect services and activities to students, families, and school staff for developing strategies that deal with educational, personal and social challenges that may interfere with the academic process.

The foundation for DoDEA's Guidance and Counseling Program is a Competency-Based Counseling Program (CBCP). This comprehensive program addresses three areas of student development - personal/social; academic; and career planning. The CBCP promotes learning by helping students master skills and develop the attitudes and outlooks necessary to be successful. Counselors work with students to help them develop realistic and life-fulfilling plans based on a clear self-understanding and an awareness of their needs, abilities, interests, and skills.

DoDEA has made changes to its DROP/ADD Guidance for the 2008-2009 School Year. Parents of students under the age of 18 may request a drop/add for their student by writing to the student's guidance counselor within 10 days of the beginning of the school year; beginning of the semester, or within 10 days of transferring to the school. Students who are 18 may submit their request to drop/add to their guidance counselor in writing and must also notify their parents within 10 days of the beginning of the school year; beginning of the semester, or within 10 days of transferring to the school. All drop/adds must include a justification and must be documented. Exceptions will be determined by the principal with advice from the guidance counselor and/or teacher of the course.
